The assessment committee of the Estonian Quality Agency for Higher and Vocational Education (EKKA) decided to accredit the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences (EASS) for seven years. EASS is the first higher education institution to pass a new cycle of the institutional accreditation.

It was decided at the EKKA higher education assessment committee meeting this week to accredit EASS for seven years and award EASS with the EKKA quality label. The committee highlighted the achievements in the areas of resources and study programmes. Among the strengths, the committee noted the good cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and other stakeholders and also the new study building in Tallinn which is a prime example of a good teaching and learning environment.

The Estonian Academy of Security Sciences rector Marek Link, University of Tartu rector Toomas Asser and Chairman of the Management Board of Nordecon AS Gerd Müller will be laying the cornerstone of the new building of the academy’s Narva college at 12:00 today, 18 June 2019. As part of the ceremony, a time capsule will be embedded in the structure of the building.

The Estonian Academy of Security Sciences rector Marek Link said that the construction of the new college supports developments in the study of domestic security in Narva. “By creating a base in the region we’re supporting our students in gaining practice and experience that will help them do their work much more effectively in the future,” he remarked. “One of the aims of establishing the college, and indeed of what we do generally, is to boost the sense of security in Narva and Ida-Viru County generally.”

The Financial College of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences will publish an electronic proceedings series. It will focus on analytical texts related with customs and tax issues exploring the specific problems from various perspectives, for instance, the legal, economic, educational or administrative aspects.

The aim of the proceedings is to provide a platform for the tax and customs specialists, including lecturers, researchers, practitioners, students and public officials to discuss the problems and solutions in the field in the form of descriptive, analytical and scientific texts. The proceedings issues will be published according to the frequency of submitted manuscripts providing the authors with a fast and flexible possibility to introduce the results of their research, analyses and projects.

Altogether 13 Master’s students of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences (EASS) defend their theses on 5-7 June 2019.

The next training session of the development cooperation project for Ukrainian EOD technicians takes place in Estonia on 3-7 June 2019. The training will be participated by seven people from Lviv and five people from Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs – altogether nine students and three instructors.

“We are pleased to state that our activity in the project is valued highly and it is gradually expanding now including not only Lviv University but also Kharkiv University,” the Director of Rescue College of EASS Häli Allas is proud to talk about our high-quality lecturers and training programme.

On 8-12 April, the service dogs training centre of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences in Muraste hosted an international team to conduct a pre-mission service dog trailing and search training led by Frontex. The trainers from Finland and Lithuania provided training sessions for participants from Austria, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Estonia.

The training included trailing and search demonstrations both in the Muraste training field and terrain. On Friday morning, 12 April, they drove to the forest about 20 km from Muraste to complete the final training session including the service dog trailing demonstration in terrain together with work with maps and giving first aid.

The aim of the training was to provide dog handlers with the skills and knowledge to use service dogs in guarding the EU external border.

This week on 1-4 April, three members of the work group of the Rescue Board explosives ordnance disposal centre are visiting the Lviv State University of Life Safety in Ukraine in connection with the EASS development cooperation project.

The aim of the current meeting of the project “The Development of the Contemporary Professional Higher Education in the Area of Humanitarian EOD at the Lviv State University of Life Safety” is to discuss the next two trainings this year in Estonia. In addition to the Lviv State University of Life Safety, there will also be meetings with the EOD technicians working at the State Emergency Service and the Police of Lviv Oblast.

As of March 25, the new director of the Rescue College of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences (EASS) is Häli Allas who has a long history with the academy as an advisor of the Ministry of the Interior, a lecturer and an alumna.

Häli graduated from EASS in 2003 and defended her Master’s thesis in public administration at Tallinn University of Technology in 2006. In the past 13 years, she worked at the Rescue Board leading the rescue work department.

Rector of the Academy of Security Sciences Marek Link was selected among the alumni of the century of Tallinn University along the university’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

On Monday 18 March, Tallinn University celebrated their centenary – it was 100 years ago that regular teacher training was begun in Tallinn forming the basis for both educational innovation and the promotion of intelligent lifestyle. In connection with the celebrations, Tallinn University acknowledged its outstanding alumni who have contributed to the development of the Estonian society, culture, education and entrepreneurship. Our rector Marek Link was among those 100 alumni.

As a result of a long application process, the Financial College of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences became a member of the International Network of Customs Universities INCU.

The aim of the network is to raise the academic profile of the customs profession through the development and promotion of educational programs. The awareness of the speciality of customs is developed through various academic and applied research studies. The activities of the network provide customs agencies with intellectual input while the mutual cooperation between the researchers and practitioners contributes to the development of either field.
